why MARSHA+?
Marsha P. Johnson, born in 1945 in New Jersey, was an African American transgender woman and a pivotal figure in the LGBTI+ rights movement. She gained prominence after the Stonewall riots in 1969 and co-founded the organization STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) with Sylvia Rivera. Together, they provided support to trans women, drag queens, and impoverished LGBTI+ individuals, establishing the STAR House as a refuge.
In the 1980s, Marsha joined the ACT UP movement, advocating for AIDS awareness and supporting those affected by HIV. Despite her significant activism, her life tragically ended in 1992 when she was found dead in the Hudson River under suspicious circumstances, leading to ongoing demands for a thorough investigation.
Her legacy is commemorated by the "P" in her name, which stood for "Pay it no mind," a phrase reflecting her resilience and defiance. Marsha's iconic image was captured by Andy Warhol in his "Ladies and Gentlemen" series in 1974.
This coin honors Marsha's memory and celebrates the resilience of the LGBTI+ community, both those who have passed away and those who continue to fight for equality.
